| Finally we made a trip to Dinosaur NP in late September. The Colorado section is not as popular as the Utah portion. There is only one ranger on duty and it is all about canyons. The 31 miles of Harper Corner Scenic Drive is paved with several overlooks. The one mile one-way trail at the end provides 300 degree view of several canyons and the Green River. The Echo Park Drive is 13 miles of unpaved road off the Harper Corner Drive. It is well maintained and not a difficult drive at all. After descending quickly down several switchbacks, the road open up and down to the narrow bottom of canyons with high rocks. To the end it is the famous "Steamboat Rock" at the confluence of the Yampa River flowing into the Green River. The campground and picnic area are right along the Green River. It is quiet and serene watching rafts and clouds floating by. It takes us about 4 hours in the Colorado Section without doing any hiking. We'll go back again hiking and camping. Please pay a visit to Flaming Gorge National Rec. Area if you are coming from Yellowstone NP (exit off I-80 at Green River, Wyoming). It has 3 major areas, including Sheep Creek Canyon, the Red Cayon and the Reservoir. The Green River is unbelievable green at the Red Canyon Visitor Center Overlook. It is not the same dirty brown river you see at Dinosaur and Cayonlands. We camped at Lucern park campground with hot shower. We'll make to the free tour of the reservior and the 5-mile canyon rim trail the next time. | |||
